Etruscan Coast



unitedkingdom_gs.gif"Costa degli Etruschi" is the name of the coastal belt which encloses the natural oasis of Bolgheri, the wonderful pine-wood of Cecina, the beautiful hills of Bibbona, Bolgheri and Monte Calvi where the typical Mediterranean vegetation alternates with fantastic chestnuts.

The medieval towns of Castagneto Carducci, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima are a must for those who
love art and history: tourists can admire thewell-preserved ancient walls and the wonderful fortified buildings.

In Etruscan times one of the most important activities in the area (above all in Monte Calvi) was mining.
In Costa degli Etruschi there are a lotof interesting places to visit and discover: Piombino, the nearby Gulfof Baratti and the necropolis of Populonia, an ancient Etruscan citywhere metals mined from the island of Elba were processed.

The “Lauretum” also called “Coastal Horizon” is the widest area: from the seait reaches a medium height of about 250 metres above sea level.

The area called“Castanetum” or “Mediterranean Horizon” occupies the rest of the territory. It is a land rich in humus where a big variety oftrees and beautiful plants grow: by taking the nature paths you will admire the lentiscus the strawberry tree, the juniper, broom, heather or holly.

About one century ago the area was the reign ofseveral wild animals and it was visited only by hunters and shepherds. Today it is became a very important resource: it can provide wood, coal and small charcoal, elements which are important but not very used nowadays.

Thanks to its mild climate and its strategical geographical position the Etruscan coast is the ideal place for your holiday. The wind which in this area blows above all in the morning, is one of the most important elements: it influences the vegetation and the morphology of the coast.

There are many different types of winds: from October to February we have got the Western wind which blows above all in the afternoon, while the “Libeccio” with its destructive influence on the coast is the prevailing south-west wind. Sometimes it has been very dangerous for the inhabitants of the area: some years ago it destroyed several seaside resorts and little boats present in the beautiful ports of the Etruscan coast.

From Rosignano on the prevailing winds are: the mistral, a north-west wind and the “Libeccio”. Another important weather-element is the rain concentrated above all in October, November and March.
